COMPLETE USER GUIDE

How to use Mentu

Everything you need to know — from registration to running intelligent classes, managing an institution, and using every feature. Choose your role.

GETTING STARTED

Welcome, Teacher.

Mentu is a complete Learning Operating System. This guide walks you through every step — from creating your account to running intelligent classes and growing professionally.

✔

No software downloads required. Mentu works on any modern browser — desktop, tablet, or mobile.

1. Register & Verify Your Account

2. Set Up Your School Brand

Personalise your school's identity. This branding appears to students across your classroom and course pages.

ℹ️

If you join an institution, the institution's brand is automatically applied to your classroom. You can re-sync it anytime from the institution dashboard.

3. Complete Your Teacher Profile

Your profile is public — students can view it before enrolling. A complete profile builds trust and attracts more students.

  • Full name: Your professional display name.
  • Bio: A short paragraph about your teaching background.
  • Subjects: The subjects you teach (e.g. Mathematics, Physics).
  • Qualifications: Your degrees or certifications.
  • Years of experience, location, languages spoken.
  • Website: Your personal or school website URL.

Go to My Profile from the dashboard sidebar to fill in all details, then click Save Profile.

💡

Once you complete a simulator session, a public Teaching Portfolio is generated at mentu.ng/portfolio/your-slug — share this with schools and parents.

4. Set Up Payment Settings

To accept paid course enrollments, configure your bank details so Mentu can split payments to you via Paystack.

⚠️

Commission rates: Free tier teachers pay 10% platform commission on paid enrollments. Premium teachers (and institution teachers) pay 5%. You receive the remainder directly via Paystack split.

5. Activate Your 14-Day Premium Trial

Unlock all premium features free for 14 days — one time per account.

  • Click Free Trial in your sidebar (visible if you haven't activated yet), or go to /premium-trial.
  • Click Activate 14-Day Free Trial. Your account is immediately upgraded.
  • Premium unlocks: unlimited courses, unlimited students per course, class recording, YouTube upload, and 5% commission (down from 10%).
  • After 14 days, your account returns to free tier limits unless you top up credits.
⚠️

Free tier limits: 1 active course, 25 students per course, 60-minute session cap (auto-ended with a 5-minute warning). The trial removes all these limits for 14 days.

6. Credits & Subscription

Mentu uses a credit system to power AI features and premium access. 1 credit = ₦10. Credits never expire.

What credits are used for

  • Session start: 2 credits per live class session.
  • Recording: 1 credit per recording processed.
  • AI Summary: 1 credit per class summary generated.
  • AI Generate (quiz/assignment from session): 3 credits.
  • AI Marking: 1 credit per submission marked by AI.
  • AI Questions (question bank generation): 2 credits.

Topping up credits

ℹ️

Institution accounts share a single credit pool across all their teachers. The institution owner tops up credits and all member teachers draw from the same balance.

YOUR COURSES

Creating & Managing Courses

7. Create a Course

⚠️

Free tier teachers can only have 1 active course. Activate the Premium Trial or top up credits to create more.

8. Add Course Modules

Modules are the chapters or units of your course — they give students a clear learning path and are used by the AI Homework Companion to recommend your course to relevant students.

  • Open your course in Course Management.
  • Click the Modules tab and then Add Module.
  • Enter the module title, description, and estimated duration.
  • Add as many modules as needed. You can reorder them by dragging.
  • Update or delete modules at any time from the same tab.
💡

The AI Homework Companion matches students' questions to your course modules by keyword. Descriptive module titles (e.g. "Quadratic Equations", "Photosynthesis") increase how often your course is recommended.

9. Upload Course Materials

Share PDFs, documents, videos, links, and other resources with enrolled students.

  • Go to your course → Materials tab.
  • Click Upload Material and choose a file (PDF, video, image, document, etc.).
  • Add a title and description so students know what it is.
  • Uploaded materials are immediately visible to enrolled students.
  • Students receive a real-time notification: "New course material available."
  • You can edit or delete materials at any time.
📚

After a live class ends, Mentu automatically creates a Class Recap material containing the AI summary, whiteboard snapshots, quiz results, and replay link — no manual work needed.

10. Post Announcements

Send important messages to all students enrolled in a course — class changes, new resources, reminders.

  • Go to your course → Announcements tab.
  • Click New Announcement, enter a title and message.
  • Tick Mark as Important to display it prominently (shown in red on student dashboards).
  • Students receive an instant notification on their dashboard and in-class if currently in a session.
  • You can edit or delete announcements after posting.

LIVE CLASSROOM

Running a Live Class

Every Mentu class is a full teaching environment — video, interactive whiteboard, screen sharing, quizzes, assignments, polls, chat, and recording all in one place.

11. Start a Live Class

⚠️

Free tier sessions are capped at 60 minutes. You will receive a warning at 55 minutes. The session auto-ends at 60 minutes. Upgrade to Premium to remove this limit.

12. Whiteboard & Drawing Tools

The interactive whiteboard is the core teaching canvas. Everything drawn is synchronised live to all students, recorded, and replayable after class.

✏️

Freehand Pen

Draw freely in any colour. Adjust line thickness with the size slider. Supports pressure-sensitive drawing on tablets.

◻️

Shapes

Draw lines, rectangles, ellipses, and arrows — perfect for diagrams and flowcharts.

🇹

Text Tool

Click anywhere on the board and type text. Resize and reposition text blocks freely.

∑

Math Equations

Insert LaTeX-rendered equations — fractions, integrals, square roots, and more. Click the Math button in the toolbar.

📈

Create multiple whiteboards per session — one per topic. Switch between boards using the tabs at the top. All boards are recorded and replayable.

Whiteboard Controls

  • Undo (Ctrl+Z): Remove the last stroke.
  • Clear board: Erases the current board. All strokes are still preserved in the replay history.
  • Reorder boards: Drag board tabs to reorder them.
  • Grant student access: Give a specific student permission to draw on your whiteboard.
  • Scroll mode: On mobile, toggle scroll mode to scroll the board without accidentally drawing.
  • Snapshots: The system automatically takes whiteboard snapshots at key moments (topic changes, quiz launches) for the Class Recap.

13. Screen Sharing & Annotation

Share your screen, browser tab, or application window with all students in real time.

💡

You can grant a student screen share permission — they share their screen while you annotate on it. All other students see both the shared screen and your annotations in real time.

14. Video, Audio & Participant Management

Manage who can be seen and heard in your classroom.

  • Your video tile appears in the footer bar. Click the camera icon to toggle your video on/off.
  • Click the microphone icon to mute/unmute yourself.
  • The Participants panel shows all connected students with their connection status.
  • Mute a student: Click their name in the participants panel and select Mute.
  • Grant mic permission: When a student raises their hand, click their name and select Allow to Speak.
  • Grant whiteboard access: Click a student's name and select Grant Whiteboard Access.
  • Grant screen share: Click a student's name and select Allow Screen Share.
  • Remove a participant: Click their name and select Remove from Class.
ℹ️

Mentu uses LiveKit for video (SFU-based) when configured, falling back to peer-to-peer WebRTC. Video quality adapts automatically to each participant's connection speed.

15. Classroom Chat

The chat panel lets students ask questions and participate without interrupting your flow.

  • The chat panel is on the right side of the classroom. Click the chat icon to open/close it.
  • You can post Announcements in chat — these are pinned and highlighted for all students.
  • All chat messages are saved and appear in the Living Replay timeline as markers.
  • Chat activity is tracked in student analytics (engagement score).

16. Live Quizzes

💡

After class, use AI Generate Quiz to automatically create a new quiz from the session content — questions are generated from what was actually taught on the whiteboard and in chat.

17. Polls

Polls are quick multiple-choice questions to check understanding in real time — no grading, just instant feedback.

  • Click Poll in the classroom toolbar.
  • Type your question and add 2–5 answer options.
  • Click Send Poll. Students see it immediately and tap their answer.
  • Results appear live as a bar chart as students respond — visible to you and optionally to students.
  • Close the poll when done. Results are saved in the session timeline.

18. Assignments in Class

Create and send assignments during a live class or prepare them in advance from Course Management.

  • In the classroom, click Assignment in the toolbar.
  • Write the assignment question. You can include math notation, graphs, and images.
  • Set a total points value and optional due date.
  • Click Send — students see the assignment immediately and can respond with text, drawings, and file uploads.
  • Review and grade submissions from Grade Submissions on your dashboard after class.

19. Recording & YouTube Upload

Every class session can be recorded and automatically uploaded to your YouTube channel.

⚠️

Recording and YouTube upload are Premium features. Activate your 14-day free trial or ensure you have an active credit balance to use them.

20. Guest Invites

Invite people to join a class without requiring them to create a Mentu account first.

  • In the classroom, click Invite Guest or go to Guest Invites in your dashboard.
  • Enter the guest's email address. A one-time invite link is sent to them.
  • The guest clicks the link, enters their name, and verifies with an OTP sent to their email.
  • They join the classroom as a named guest — their attendance, quiz answers, and assignments are all recorded.
  • You can view all active guest invites and revoke any invite from the Guest Invites panel.
  • If the guest later registers a Mentu account using the same email, their entire guest history is automatically transferred to their new account.

AFTER CLASS

What Happens After Class Ends

When you end a class, Mentu automatically processes everything and turns it into lasting educational value.

21. Grade Submissions

After class, go to Grade Submissions from your dashboard to review and grade all quiz and assignment submissions.

  • Select the course and submission type (Assignment or Quiz).
  • View each student's response — text, drawings, files, and math notation are all rendered correctly.
  • Enter a score, letter grade, and feedback for each student.
  • Click Save Grade. Students receive their grade on their dashboard immediately.
  • Use Mark with AI to get an AI-generated score suggestion and feedback. You can accept or edit it before saving.
  • Attach a Rubric to any assignment for criteria-based grading — select one from the dropdown on any submission.
ℹ️

You can also edit grades from the Edit Grades page (/edit-grades) which shows all submissions in a spreadsheet-style view for bulk grading.

22. AI Tools After Class

After a session ends, several AI tools become available to help you create follow-up content from what was actually taught.
